  It is necessary to design the future society, envision the necessary processes, and seek the appropriate elemental technologies to achieve carbon neutrality. The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ) is working to develop and deepen specific case studies, technologies, and academic systems by strengthening cooperation with local industries and communities.

  Following symposiums held at every annual meeting and fall meeting since March 2020, we will hold a symposium with invited lectures, requested lectures, and a panel discussion on energy and environmental innovation and its social implementation in the afternoon on March 16th, the day before the 91st Annual Meeting. In this symposium, we will explain "Carbon Independence Vision 4.0 : Circular Transformation from Hard-to-Abate Industries" and discuss the Inter-industry collaboration.

  The symposium will be open to the public with free of charge to all participants, and we hope that many of you will join us in discussing the future society that chemical engineering will innovate, and that these activities will contribute to the promotion of interdisciplinary research and academic development of the society.

  In the afternoon on the 17th, a poster session (P-1) will be held on-site. We look forward to presentations and discussions covering a wide range of topics related to carbon neutrality, including technology development, dissemination and implementation, industrial and social transformation, and evaluation methods. Those who wish to present are kindly requested to submit an abstract for the session P-1.

• SP-2 [Special Symposium] Potential of Startups based in Chemical Engineering

  Organizers: Inoue Gen (Kyushu Univ.), Oka Kouki (Tohoku Univ.), Kitakawa Naomi (Tohoku Univ.), Goto Masahiro (Kyushu Univ.), Koyama Michihisa (Shinshu Univ.), Tokoro Chiharu (Waseda Univ.), Noma Madoka (UTEC), Matsuda Keigo (Nagoya Univ.)

  Startups are increasingly expected to serve as a driving force for sustainable economic growth. The Japanese government designated 2022 as the "First Year of Startup Creation" and formulated a five-year plan to increase the number of startups tenfold, positioning them as key players for innovation.

  In particular, expectations are rising for deep-tech startups, tackling deeply rooted social challenges with advanced technologies. These startups typically face long timelines before product launch, require capital on a scale an order of magnitude larger than that of conventional ventures, and often struggle with issues such as mismatches between R&D and management talent, as well as communication gaps between researchers and investors.

  This symposium will feature talks addressing topics such as the human-resource challenges surrounding startups, corporate efforts in open innovation, the hurdles faced by academia-origin startups during formation, and the challenges they encounter in scaling their businesses. From the perspective of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, a community where academic researchers with deep-tech seeds gather, we aim to discuss opportunities for fostering startups and driving societal transformation.

• SP-3 [Special Symposium] Implementing the Sapporo Declaration: Exploring Sustainable and Sufficient Dietary Lifestyles for the SDGs [Public symposium] SDGs Committee, Center for Strategic Planning

  Plastics remain predominantly disposable and continues to cause various environmental problems. This symposium will explore opportunities for advancing plastics resource circulation by introducing industry initiatives related to plastics from the past to the present. Furthermore, we will discuss the value of resource circulation through a workshop format aimed at fostering behavioral change in both individual companies and consumers.

  Supercritical fluids and their properties are becoming increasingly important for sustainable societal development, with a growing range of practical applications. This symposium will highlight recent research and advances in utilising these unique properties in manufacturing. Leading researchers from around the world will present the latest trends and developments in this rapidly evolving field, demonstrating how supercritical fluids' remarkable properties enable innovative manufacturing processes. Presentations at this symposium will be 30 minutes long, including 5-minute question period.

• SS-1 The Current Status and Challenges of Plastic Chemical Recycling - Towards the Realization of a Circular Economy Society - Center for Academia-Industry Exchange

  To build a sustainable circular economy, we need resource-recycling plastic technologies that don't rely solely on incineration for thermal recycling. In Japan, various chemical and material recycling technologies are being developed ahead of other countries as alternatives to landfill and incineration. This session will cover domestic and international trends in creating a resource-recycling society through plastic chemical recycling, as well as the current status and challenges of efforts in Japan.

• X-52 The Challenge of Reducing CO2 Emissions through the Integration of Thermal Energy Technologies Division of Thermal Engineering

  Various research and development efforts in energy generation and utilization have been actively conducted in response to the problem of reducing CO₂ emissions. Thermal energy, one form of energy, is indispensable for industry and consumer, but it is extremely difficult to store and transport, and low-temperature heat is discarded without being used. Under these circumstances, it is important not only to improve thermal efficiency but also to develop methods, processes, and management technologies to utilize unused heat without wasting in order to reduce CO₂ emissions. In this symposium, we will hold a symposium on heat utilization processes such as thermal circuits, heat management technologies, and high-efficiency heat utilization, and will actively discuss heat utilization.
